Colon bioaccessibility under in vitro gastrointestinal digestion of a red cabbage extract chemically profiled through UHPLC‐Q‐Orbitrap HRMS

2020

Red cabbage is a native vegetable of the Mediterranean region that represents one of the major sources of anthocyanins. The aim of this research is to evaluate the antioxidant capability and total polyphenol content (TPC) of a red cabbage extract and to compare acquired data with those from the same extract encapsulated in an acid-resistant capsule. The extract, which was qualitatively and quantitatively profiled by UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS analysis, contained a high content of anthocyanins and phenolic acids, whereas non-anthocyanin flavonoids were the less abundant compounds. An in vitro gastrointestinal digestion system was utilized to follow the extract&rsquo

Selective targeting of collagen IV in the cancer cell microenvironment reduces tumor burden

2018

Goodpasture antigen-binding protein (GPBP) is an exportable1 Ser/Thr kinase that induces collagen IV expansion and has been associated with chemoresistance following epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Here we demonstrate that cancer EMT phenotypes secrete GPBP (mesenchymal GPBP) which displays a predominant multimeric oligomerization and directs the formation of previously unrecognized mesh collagen IV networks (mesenchymal collagen IV). Yeast two-hybrid (YTH) system was used to identify a 260SHCIE264 motif critical for multimeric GPBP assembly which then facilitated design of a series of potential peptidomimetics. The compound 3-[4''-methoxy-3,2'-dimethyl-(1,1';4',1'')terphenyl-2'…

Repurposing old drugs to fight multidrug resistant cancers.

2020

Overcoming multidrug resistance represents a major challenge for cancer treatment. In the search for new chemotherapeutics to treat malignant diseases, drug repurposing gained a tremendous interest during the past years. Repositioning candidates have often emerged through several stages of clinical drug development, and may even be marketed, thus attracting the attention and interest of pharmaceutical companies as well as regulatory agencies. Typically, drug repositioning has been serendipitous, using undesired side effects of small molecule drugs to exploit new disease indications. As bioinformatics gain increasing popularity as an integral component of drug discovery, more rational approa…

Earthquake-resistant construction techniques in Italy between 1880 and 1910: alternatives to reinforced concrete

2017

The series of earthquakes that struck Italy between the late nineteenth century and the first decade of the twentieth century spurred a lively debate about earthquake-resistant buildings that, through the influence of foreign experience, resulted in specialised literature and competitions that gave rise to a series of interesting patents. Innovative construction solutions for seismic areas were largely developed after the earthquake that struck the cities of Messina and Reggio Calabria in 1908, alongside the parallel advances in reinforced concrete. New earthquake-resistant construction solutions were based on a reassessment of traditional construction methods that used bricks, timber or me…

Early Results of Fissurectomy and Advancement Flap for Resistant Chronic Anal Fissure without Hypertonia of the Internal Anal Sphincter

2010

The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of fissurectomy with skin advancement flap in healing chronic anal fissures without hypertonia of the internal anal sphincter. Twenty-six consecutive patients who failed healing after well-practiced topical medical therapy were enrolled. Anorectal manometry was performed preoperative and 6 months postoperatively. All patients were treated with fissurectomy and advancement flap through healthy skin tissue. All patients healed completely within 30 days from operation. The intensity and the duration of pain post-defecation was reduced significantly with respect to the preoperative values starting from the first defecation. One patient suffered …

The EAACI/GA2LEN/EDF/WAO Guideline for the definition, classification, diagnosis, and management of urticaria: the 2013 revision and update

2014

This guideline is the result of a systematic literature review using the 'Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation' (GRADE) methodology and a structured consensus conference held on 28 and 29 November 2012, in Berlin. It is a joint initiative of the Dermatology Section of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI), the EU-funded network of excellence, the Global Allergy and Asthma European Network (GA(2)LEN), the European Dermatology Forum (EDF), and the World Allergy Organization (WAO) with the participation of delegates of 21 national and international societies. Urticaria is a frequent, mast cell-driven disease, presenting with wheals, angioe…

HTLS Conductors: A Way to Optimize RES Generation and to Improve the Competitiveness of the Electrical Market—A Case Study in Sicily

2018

Stringent environmental constraints make more difficult to identify new energy corridors and build new power lines. The increase in the generation of electricity from renewable energy sources (RESs) makes the operation of electrical systems increasingly difficult in some areas. The transmission system operators (TSOs), in Italy Terna, are forced to exploit the existing overhead transmission lines, increasing the possibility of dispatching energy, in particular RES, optimizing the transmission capacity. Therefore, after a brief presentation of the Sicilian electricity system and a brief description of high-temperature low-sag (HTLS) conductors, a case study is presented. It is shown how it i…

Uprating an Overhead Line. Italian TSO Applications for Integration of RES

2013

The increase of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) production units has caused significant changes in the electrical system configuration. The existing structural asset isn't adequate to dispatch these new power flows that, at same time, should be favorite by various TSOs in order to obtain incentives. The outage of primary substations on the grid and the increase of consumptions have caused growing load currents on existing overhead line. This paper, after introducing thermal resistant conductors and Dynamic Rating (DR) solutions, reports an applications used by TERNA Group S.p.A. (Italian TSO). These systems are already installed on lines and they are contributing to increase power flows than…

Uprating an overhead line. Italian TSO applications to increase system N-1 security

2013

This paper analyzes innovative devices to optimize the energy flows transmission on existing overhead lines. Indeed sometimes the structural asset isn’t adequate to manage energy generated by Renewable Energy Source (RES) in particular operating conditions. In addiction the outage of primary substations on the grid and the increase of consumptions have caused growing load currents. In order to satisfy these needs, TSOs have adopted new measures on existing power lines and N-1 criteria to ensures the electrical grid security. These particular devices are Dynamic Rating systems. After introducing thermal resistant conductors and Dynamic Rating (DR) solutions, paper reports two different appli…

Antiproliferative activity against leukemia cells of sesquiterpene lactones from the Turkish endemic plant Centaurea drabifolia subsp. detonsa

2017

The apolar organic extract obtained from aerial parts of Centaurea drabifolia Sibth. & Sm. subsp. detonsa (Bornm.) Wagenitz, growing wild in Turkey, was investigated for the first time for its secondary metabolite composition. Seven sesquiterpene lactones belonging to the guaiane class (1-7), including the new compound 4, along with a fatty acid lactone derivative (8), were isolated. The structures of these compounds were established by spectroscopic analysis, including 2D NMR spectroscopic techniques, with the stereostructure of the new guaiane 4 determined with the help of MTPA derivatization. Cytotoxic activities of compounds 1-7 were evaluated against two cancer cell lines, namely acute…
